Time to Improve

As time goes by while I’m immured in the house, I try to think of ways to keep active — more mentally than physically.

I’ve taken webinars for work and am going through online courses that I find interesting and helpful. I find myself looking at courses as diverse as fiction writing and hydroponics. Not overly compatible, but definitely something that keep s my attention.

If you are tired of watching movies and TV reruns, I would like to suggest a few possibilities — most of them free!

Want to tackle something at the college level? Try a MOOC. That’s a massive open online courses. Colleges and universities all over the world take video recordings of the professors teaching actual classes. Those recordings are uploaded and offered for free to anyone who wants to watch them.

You can study with students in Australia, Israel, Canada and the most elite universities in the United States among many others.

Here is a snippet from the Partners page of cousera.org. https://www.coursera.org/about/partners:

Coursera offers computer courses, business courses, languages, health, math and science and more. The free classes don’t offer you credits toward a degree, but the learning will still be in your mind and you will be ready if you have a need to know.

Another MOOC is https://www.edx.org/. This site is similar to Coursera. The classes are free and all are recorded in big-name schools. How about taking a class from M.I.T., Harvard or Berkeley? You can check out information at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University if you get the urge.

Do you need some refresher on classes a little more on the high school level? Try https://www.khanacademy.org/. Their tagline on their home page is “We’re a nonprofit with the mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.”

Here is a list of topics that you can access at Khan Academy.

Review, update, refresh, grow. Make wise use of the time we have until we’re released to go back to regular life to find out something interesting to you.

Stretch your brain and find out something new.

Wouldn’t it be cool to go back to work and say, “I studied at Harvard while we were off work”? Or “the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology”?

Challenge yourself and go for it!
